FT. BRANCH, Ind. – Tyra Buss of Mt. Carmel High School broke the Illinois career scoring record on Saturday night.
Buss, the reigning Illinois Ms. Basketball, entered the championship game at the Toyota Teamwork Classic only two points shy of the record of 4,031 points set by Brittany Johnson of East Richland (Olney) from 2003-07. Two free throws in the game’s first two minutes tied the mark. Buss then hit a 3-point field goal seconds later to secure the record.
Buss, who leads the nation in scoring, scored 61 more points to finish with a total of 66, breaking her own school single-game record of 60 set just 24 hours earlier.
Mt. Carmel (11-2) still lost to Princeton, Ind., their chief rival in the Indiana-based Big 8 Conference, 84-82.
“It really means a lot, with the community congratulating me all day,” said Buss of the record. “Winning means a lot to me, so I’m kind of heartbroken right now, but the individual accomplishment is very honorable.”
Buss, at her current scoring pace of 47.4 points per game, could finish as high as second in the all-time national scoring race, according to National Federation of High School listings at nfhs.org.
