Pinckneyville wins SIRR Mississippi for first time

PINCKNEYVILLE – History was made in Perry County Friday night.

Pinckneyville clobbered Sparta 50-12 and just a few minutes later Carterville completed an upset over Anna-Jonesboro to bring an outright SIRR-Mississippi division title to Pinckneyville for the first time since the conference came into existence in 1993.

“It’s really hard to put into words,” said Pinckneyville head coach Tod Rushing. “The kids just played their guts out, and Carterville helped us out a lot. We’ve had some co-championships before. This is our first outright championship.”

Pinckneyville got off to a fast start against Sparta. Ky Hamilton returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.

“We just wanted to get down to business,” Rushing said. “We ran the opening kickoff back and that said we were ready to play.”
