I remember playing here as a visitor when it was carpet. Strange! Never was able to hear bounce of ball or sqeek of shoes. Like playing on AstroTurf.

Love the pics of the Illinois gyms I have been blessed to play, coach or visit many Illinois gyms. Have some favorites, Salem, Centralia, West Frankfort, Pinkneyville, Eldorado, Campaign Central, Herrin, Flora, Red Hill, Cobden, Hoopston to name a few. Just took a job teaching and coaching in Indiana. I am so excited just to coach at some of the gyms in the Big 8. Jasper seats over 5000, Booneville over 5000, Princeton over 5000, Mt. Vernon has a nice gym seating 3300 and the big one the Hatchet House in Washington Seats over 7200 built in 1925. Old Railroad town that kinda reminds me of Centralia. Should be a fun year.

I haven't been to Collinsville or Quincy would like to some day.

"West Hancock" is not actually a high school, but rather the name for the Hamilton and Warsaw coop. Nauvoo-Colusa HS was previously apart of the coop before the high school closed. Their kids now attend Warsaw HS.

Peoria Journal-Star is doing a "Dandy Gyms" series profiling (with photos) various fabled gyms in their circulation area.

Today's installment is Dawson "Dawdy" Hawkins Gym in Pekin:
