Gotta love the Macomb vs Riverton game on Friday...a rematch of the teams in the Macomb 2006 Super-sectional....

Interesting matchups Fri in Carthage vs Tri-Valley, West Praire vs Macon-Meridan, Rochester vs Manteno, Colfax vs Pawnee...

Obviously Coach Hampton makes the schedule fair for other participating teams as Riverton only plays in the Hawk Center once...

I'll try and do updates Fri night and Sat afternoon of W's or L's and which players looked impressive or improved greatly, in my opinion...

Nothin like traveling 2 1/2 hrs to see our Manteno Panthers play some B-Ball.
Looks as if it's gonna be a hot one on both days [90 plus]
Good luck to all the teams participating @ Riverton.

Riverton Class A Summer Shootout - News & Notes

Good day of basketball at Riverton but West Prairie was a no-show. I was told Doug Fisher was let go on Wednesday this week. Would have been nice to see former N-C star Kellen Fernetti bring the Cyclones over to play at this event. A squad of Riverton alumni filled in and played in their absence. Riverton's Matt Koger, John DeRosa, Doug Cantrall, Tim Blanchard, Kory Wright, and Matt Lamkey are a TOUGH match-up for ANY class A team, so the competition was top-notch.

Carlinville -
The Cavies turned a few heads as they had a solid first day, going 2-0, beating Carthage by 2 and Pleasant Plains by 1, two respected programs. Carlinville head coach, John Reels has a talented junior player in 6'3" Luke Pohlman. Pohlman can drive, elevate, and score over bigger players. Good to see Skip Brooks' son, Luke Brooks, is the asst. coach for the Cavies.

Macomb -
Did you know last year during the regular season, Macomb played SIX AA teams and beat every one of them? Once again, the Bombers will be a force to be reckoned with in Class A. Macomb coach Dan Watson lost a lot talent off last years squad, especially when Thompson and Bainter graduated. But as usual since Watson took over the Macomb program, the Bombers play great M2M defense and shoot the ball well from the perimeter. 6'7" junior all-state post player Matt Buren has improved his footwork and posts moves. Once Buren learns to take over a game and score more, Macomb will be a load, as Buren is unselfish to a fault at times. Macomb lost to Riverton 54-41 in their first game and defeated Pittsfield in their last game of the day. In my opinion, Macomb will easily be a Top 10 rated Class A team once again, but also keep an eye on Farmington, Orion, and Sherrard in the always tough Oly conference.(especially Farmington)

Springfield Lutheran -
The Crusaders made the regional final game in Williamsville a year ago before bowing out to Riverton. Lutheran coach Mike Workman returns a load of talent, lead by Sr. Devin Gilman, who is a player capable of 20 ppg . Lutheran went 2-0 on the day, handily defeating Tri-Valley and then holding off a scrappy New Berlin squad.

Pleasant Plains -
The Cardinals are yoooooo-uuuung but talented. Plains coach Cliff Cameron brings back key players in seniors Zack Fox and Erik Turley, while juniors David Bergschneider and Scott Gnuse will also be counted on to contribute. Plains went 1-1 on the day, beating New Berlin in their first game and lost by 1 point to Carlinville, a game Plains lead almost the entire way.

Riverton -
The Hawks finished the day 3-0, beating Macomb 54-41, beating Macon-Meridian (without Travis Rosenkranz) by 15, then beating AC Central/Virgina by 20 in the last game of the day. AC Central only had seven players, as the Knights were missing Jokisch and several other starting guards. 7ft Illini recruit Mike Tisdale has scored 25+ppg and grabbed nearly double digit boards in every game I've seen him play this summer, along with his numerous blocked shots as well. Tisdale has become even more of a post-presence and is now up to 210lbs. Riverton Jr. forward Joe Wiktorek has proven a year in the weight room really pays dividends, as Wiktorek is the strongest player on the Hawks squad. Pretty obvious to me football always helps in strength conditioning for basketball players. Jr. PG Justin Koger continues to improve offensively by attacking seams, getting to the basket and finding the open man, but Justin is best known for his tenacious on-the-ball defense. Riverton has the potential to be as good as last year, especially with a deeper bench, but early on it will hard to replace the graduated senior leadership of Tony Lucca, Alex Koehler, and Ron Tisdale. The Hawks will need players such as Randy Betz, Devin Zimmerman, Jake Behrens, and Josh Trader to develop into consistent outside shooters to keep opponents from sagging and double/triple teaming Tisdale. Riverton could once again be a top 16 team by season's end.

Illini Bluffs -
I didn't get a chance to see them play, but Ian McDonald's Bluejays went 2-0, defeating Macon-Meridian and Williamsville.

Colfax-Ridgeview -
Rodney Kellar's Mustangs went 2-0, beating Pittsfield in the first game, then knocking off Pawnee later on.

Speaking of Macon-Meridan, Meridian coach Jack Blickensderfer reported the Hawks all-state PG, Sr. Travis Rosenkranz wasn't playing today because he was visiting Princeton and Colgate. FYI- Travis has left the St. Louis Eagles AAU team and is now getting much more playing time and exposure as a point guard for the Chicago Fire AAU squad.

Speaking of AC Central, coach Sam Nicholas deftly points out (and I agree) that 6'4" Jr. Damian Larson, an athletic foward for the Knights, is an up-and-coming player to keep an eye on. Larson has excellent hops, can knock down the deep three, and can play all five positions on the floor.

Excellent Summary Greg. Riverton puts on a top-notch event and it's always a pleasure to visit with Jon Hampton. I saw some excellent basketball today. Riverton is going to be very, very good. They really play nice D and are always fun to watch. Carlinville rallied in both of their games in the final minute to win over quality Class A programs. The program is in good hands with new coach John Reels and assistant Luke Brooks!

Nice to visit with you too Greg. With all of those great coaches floating around there, you can learn a lot just by listening

Wish I could be up there on Saturday, but football duty calls! I'll look forward to your report Greg on tomorrow's action! Keep up the great work

Nice to visit with you as well, FanTim. Best news I heard yesterday was the new potential job leads for Mr. Tarter....

Yesterday, I also had excellent conversations with Manteno coach Doug Wenzel , Pittsfield coach Brad Tomhave, and Rochester coach Jim Egan.

Wenzel is coming off a season where he graduated NINE seniors, two of whom where all-state honorable mention players in Jayme Absher and Tyler Baldwin. Manteno has a couple years of rebuilding to do, but Wenzel is a good coach and the right guy for the job. Manteno doesn't have much size this year but they do have two well-built and strong guards (didn't catch their names) who look like potential LB's or RB's for football. I didn't meet Panther Moose or earnhardt yesterday, maybe they'll intoduce themselves today.

Tomhave's squad is smaller this year, as the Saukees lost all of their bigs to graduation. Pittsfield has a 6'2" post player who will get the job done.

Egan's Rocket squad is young, but has potential in 3 junior players who made an impact at the Sangamon County Tourney last year. Ben Netherton, Will Lunt, and Zach DeFraities could once again help the Rockets impress many as the season progresses. Rochester has finished strong the last two years and always seems to play their best basketball in February and March.

Teams not playing at Riverton, but word among coaches at this shootout is Seneca, Herscher, Putnam County, Vandalia, Warsaw/Nauvoo-Colusa co-op, and Farmington are ALL teams which have the potential to be very good this year. Keep an eye on them.
