South MVP - Mike Tisdale (Riverton) - 17 pts, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks North MVP - Carlton Fay (Putnam County) - 15 pts, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks South Leadership Award: Robert Kreps (Maroa-Forsyth) - 13 pts and 5 assists North Leadership Award: Jim Kuban (Tremont) - 5 pts and 3 assists North jumped out to a 14 pt lead in the first 12 minutes of play, mainly on the excellent perimeter shooting of Carlton Fay. The South looked lethargic and flat at first. The second and third squad for the south chipped away at the lead, until STA's Chris Bohnhoff hit a dramatic last-second fall away jumper for the South to take the lead at halftime, 44-42. Carlton Fay and Mike Tisdale definitely showed off their offensive skills, as well as Robert Kreps and Travis Rosenkranz (who could both get to the basket on anyone). Three less-heralded players who REALLY impressed ne this game were: Andy Wolff(Metro East Lutheran) - Andy showed he could penetrate and dish against anyone, hit the open J, and was stellar defensively. Wolff's basketball IQ is off the charts as well. Javon Coney (Chicago Latin) - Javon was lights out from beyond the arc, right up there with Kreps for scoring from beyond 19 feet. Coney led the North squad with 17 points. Madison Medley (Harrisburg) - Madison got a little frustrated early on with two quick fouls but stayed aggressive and showed some excellent footwork, post moves around the basket. Very athletic and wants the ball. When he gets it, usually makes something good happen. The South was COLD AS ICE from the field in the first half, missing eight shots in a row during one stretch, along with a couple bunnies which rimmed out. The first few minutes of the second half, the South starting team of Robert Kreps, Mike Tisdale, Zach Hawkins, Lucas O'Rear, and Josh Babb capitalized on some missed shots by the North squad and scored four straight possessions, two of which where transition dunks to Tisdale. North Lawndale's super-quick point guard Cordarell Smith scored 16 pts for the North squad, while Farmington's work horse, Matt Goedecke added 10 pts. The South squad's trio of super-PG's carried much of the scoring load. Robert Kreps - a UIC recruit -added 13 pts and 5 assists, while Metro East Lutheran's Andy Wolff contributed 12 pts and 4 rebounds. Meridian's Travis Rosenkranz added 10 pts and 3 assists repesctively. This was probably the most class A talent on the floor that I've ever witnessed at an IBCA game. Play was sloppy at times but spectacular drives by Kreps, Cordarell Smith, Rosenkranz, and Ben Cochran would energize the crowd. Tisdale and Fay did not disappoint fans with their impressive display of offensive moves. Carlton Fay had the largest crowd personally supporting him by far, at least 30-40 people made the trip down from Putnam County. Speaking of the crowd, the place was PACKED. Biggest IBCA crowd in the last six years that I've attended, without a doubt. Rumor was Michael Jordan was going to show up to watch his son, Jeff Jordan, play in the event. I left about two minutes into the AA game and I didn't see MJ there yet. Not sure if he ever made it. Security was ready to accommodate him if MJ did show. Had a chance to speak with two excellent coaches who are leaving the business, STA'S Mike Wilson and T-Town legend, Ken Crawford. That was enjoyable as watching the game. The Class A family will dearly miss Crawford and Wilson on the sidelines.
