Statewide- Monday 6.5.2006 - Staff Report

The IHSA Class A baseball season came to a close, as IHSS' #1 rated Class A baseball team, the Illinois Valley Central Grey Ghosts, capped off an impressive 40-2 season with a State Championship win at Joliet's Silver Cross Field . IVC short-gamed Richmond-Burton, 14-4, in the quarterfinals, then dispatched highly-touted and IHSS' #2 rated team, Addison-Driscoll, 6-4, in the semi-finals. Driscoll would ultimately prove to be IVC's toughest match up of the state championship series. IVC never lost to a Class A team the entire season, suffering season losses to Washington and Limestone (both AA schools).

The Cahokia Conference also did itself proud at the Class A State Baseball Finals, putting two teams in the final four as Columbia finished 4th, losing a close contest, 10-9, to Driscoll in the third place game, while Trenton Wesclin finished 2nd to the powerful IVC squad. Our dedicated and enthusiastic southern Illinois baseball fans were cheering on the Eagles and Warriors to bring home the big trophy, but Addison Driscoll and IVC proved to be talented and top-notch opponents. Trenton Wesclin and Columbia, both ranked 20th and 25th respectively in IHSS' final poll, showed some of the pollsters they were definitely underrated at season's end.

In Girls Class A Softball, St. Joe-Ogden Lady Spartans sealed their reputation as GIANT KILLERS this year, knocking off USA Today's #11 nationally-ranked softball team, Beecher, 1-0 in the super-sectional, then dispatching the Illinois Coaches Association #1 rated team, Taylor Ridge-Rockridge, 1-0 in the quarter-finals, before defeating the highly-respected Casey-Westfield team, 1-0 in the finals, to bring home the state championship!
