Benton's Orley takes home two event championships, Sherrard team champs, back-to-back for Pinckneyville's Spencer

CHARLESTON - It was a busy weekend at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University as competitors from throughout the state congregrated to run, jump, throw, and vault themselves toward a state championship at the IHSA Class A State Finals on May 18-19. All eyes would be on the Benton Rangerettes who were the defending champions as well as Carterville's Kat Hendricks who was the two-time defending champion in the pole vault.

It would be a much tougher task for Andy Sloan's Rangerettes as they were missing one-half of the Courtney Smith/Leah Orley Dynamic Duo. Smith had suffered an injury earlier in the season that kept her out of competition for the postseason. Nevertheless, Orley was up to the challenge as she won both the triple jump and the 300-meter-low hurdles--giving the defending champs a fourth place finish. Sloan, who replaced Matt Malkovich as head coach prior to the 2004-05 season, has now coached Benton to their third consecutive placing at the State Finals Series.

Kat Hendricks of Carterville won her 3rd consecutive pole vaulting championship with a mark of 11'-3". This was her second best mark of her championship vaults--having won with 11'-7" in 2006 and 11'-2" in 2005. She qualified for state from the West Frankfort Sectional--winning that meet with a mark of 11'-4", besting 2nd place by over 2-feet. Saturday would provide a much closer battle as Clinton's Lisa Livingston vaulted 11'-0".

Pinckneyville's Kimberly Spencer also won her 2nd consecutive State Championship in the 100-meters.

Sherrard took home the team crown with a meet best 47-points, besting 2nd place Carthage by 6-points as well as Dwight and Benton by 7 and 14, respectively.
