IllinoisHighSchoolSports.com Scholarship Winners ($15,100 worth of college
scholarships awarded through 2008!) 2004- 2005- 2006- 2007- 2008
2007 IHSS Scholarship Winners
- $4000 awarded
The Administrators of
IllinoisHighSchoolSports.com met on Friday, May 11, 2007, in order
to decide which applicants would be the benefactors of the $4,000
available. The $4,000 total, per a decision over the winter months,
was to be split into Eight-$500 scholarships. This is a two
scholarship, $1,000 increase over 2006.
After spending
multiple hours reviewing the 40+ quality applicants, we decided upon
20--then 10--and then there were 8. We are honored, privileged, and
proud to announce to the world the 2007 IHSS Scholarship Winners. We
thank all applicants for making our decisions the toughest and most
thought-provoking ever!
Since May of 2004,
IllinoisHighSchoolSports.com has given out over $10,000 worth of
college scholarships. We are EXTREMELY PROUD of our IHSS members who
generously support small school athletes throughout Illinois. A BIG
THANK YOU to them all, who ultimately provide the funds to
award these winners with scholarships through our annual membership
fees. Some may not think so, but $10 a year goes a long way in
making a difference in the future academic endeavors of several
outstanding young people.
THANK YOU AND WELL DONE, IHSS MEMBERS! 2007 Steve Rheinecker
Memorial Scholarship Winner - Sara Manis - $500
On Friday, March 9,
2007, the world of IHSS changed forever with the passing of Steve
Rheinecker. Known to the masses as “panther fan,” Steve was devoted
to his family and basketball—combining the two circles by becoming
an assistant coach on his daughter Sara’s basketball team at
Elverado High School.
Steve was a great ambassador to high school
basketball, both for his beloved Pinckneyville Panthers and the game
in general. While we will never be able to measure the number of
hearts he touched, we will always be able to measure the impact he
will continue to have—as we forever dedicate an IHSS Scholarship in
his honor.
It is
with great honor that we present the inaugural Steve Rheinecker
Memorial Scholarship to the person who most exudes and reflects the
passion that Steve had for the game of basketball and life
itself.
That person
is his daughter, Sara.
Sara
Manis

Parents: Claudia and
the late Steve Rheinecker IHSS Affiliation:
Sara was nominated by IHSS members Big Daddy and SI Hoops 1 as well
as recommended by teachers and school administration. Sara is also
the step-daughter of well-respected IHSS member Panther fan, who
passed away on March 9.
A four year varsity letterwoman on the Lady
Falcons basketball team, Sara Manis was named to the All-Black
Diamond Conference West Division 2nd Team in both her junior and
senior seasons. She was also named to the Meridian and Chester
All-Tourney teams.
Sara was also a member of the Elverado Beta
Club for four years, of which she served as treasurer during her
junior term.
She
has been described as a “well-rounded student that can handle
several extracurricular tasks at once while still being a high honor
roll student.” She has also been described as an exemplification of
competitive sports as well as a visionary with regard to her future
beyond this Jackson County secondary institution.
Sara has spent
considerable time assisting with Red Cross Blood Drives, food
drives, and beautification projects around the school. She also
works part-time for Kerasotes Theatres.
Sara Manis will be attending John A. Logan
College in the fall.

teamleader 59. He was recommended by teachers and civic
leaders.
An athletic and academic hybrid in every sense of
the word, Logan Fiscus has proven himself to be a force in nearly
all walks of life. The Saluki from Red Hill High School is yet
another Valedictorian amongst the 2007 IHSS Scholarship Recipients,
having maintained a 4.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
Fiscus was a
heavily decorated member of Bill Evans’s football team having won
many honors and awards both locally and regionally. Selected to play
in the Shine All-Star game in Peoria this coming summer, Logan was
also selected to the Illinois High School Football Coaches
Association Class 2A All-State 1st Team, All-Wabash Valley 1st Team,
All-Little Illini Conference 1st Team, as well as being named to the
Vincennes Sun-Commercial All-Area Team as an offensive
lineman/tackle. One of the “tri-captains,” Fiscus was also the team
MVP and a “Co-Dirty Dawg,” which is given to the team’s best
lineman.
Logan’s academic successes also caught the eye of
sportswriters as he was voted to the All-Wabash Valley Academic
Team.
The accolades did not stop there for Fiscus. Logan was
a member of the Scholastic Bowl team, National Honor Society, the
Latin Club President, Pep Club, Science Club, the Senior Class
Vice-President, and a 4-year State Qualifier for the Math
Team.
Logan is gainfully employed part-time at the Trace Inn
Restaurant in the Red Hill State Park and also assists with lawn
maintenance in the summer months. Although he holds down employment
and is heavily involved in school, this Illinois State Scholar
dedicates time to: being a tutor, being a part of his church youth
group, helping to conduct Vacation Bible School and volunteering as
a Salvation Army Bell Ringer.
Logan Fiscus will be seeking
his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Saint Louis College of Pharmacy
in the fall.
R. Elliott
Vantrease Zeigler-Royalton High School Zeigler,
Illinois
Parents: Ted & Patty Vantrease IHSS
Affiliation: Elliott was nominated by IHSS member The Rosh and
was recommended by teachers and school staff.
Known around
ZRHS for his work on the gridiron and the literary and artistic
acclaim stemming from his work with The Vortex, the school’s
cyber magazine, Elliott Vantrease has managed to “set himself apart”
from the vast majority of students.
Labeled as a student who,
“thinks outside the box,” Elliott has parlayed his described
“intellectual curiosity” into a 5.381 GPA (on a weighted-5.0 scale)
and the role of Zeigler-Royalton Valedictorian for the Class of
2007. His ACT score was in the 99th percentile with his composite
score of 32 (out of 36)—although the most impressive facet of his
score might be the perfect 36 he scored on the Reading portion of
the exam.
With solid work experience, countless hours
performing community service, as well as extensive involvement in
academic and athletic programs, Vantrease has proven himself to be a
worthy candidate of a 2007 IHSS Scholarship.
A versatile
student-athlete, Elliott has been involved in the History Club,
Science Club, Student Council, Spanish Club, National Honor Society,
The Vortex, and on the Prom Committee as well as the WYSE
Team and Football team. He has held a multitude of leadership
positions on both the Student Council and National Honor
Society—having been a treasurer, representative, vice-president, or
president of these organizations. Elliott also served as a
Franklin-Williamson Youth Services Board Member and a Drama Club
Senior Representative.
As a co-captain of the
Christopher-Zeigler-Royalton Bearcats football team, Vantrease was a
member of the All-Black Diamond Conference team, a Wendy’s Heisman
Winner, an IHSA Scholar Athlete, a CZR Football Scholar, and a CZR
Outstanding Lineman. He also excelled in WYS taking home no less
than 3rd place at the regional level in Physics and Mathematics. He
also complemented those outstanding regional performances at the
Sectional level with a 3rd place in Mathematics.
When he’s
not working at the Christopher Dairy Queen or the Franklin County
Highway Department, Elliott is donating his time working blood
drives, tutoring, collecting coats at a coat drive, manning the
Zeigler Homecoming Shirt Stand, mentoring for the youth in the 4-H
Llama Club, or participating in the Fibromyalgia
Walk/Run.
With these credentials, it is easy to see why
Elliott Vantrease will be attending Northwestern University in the
fall.
Congratulations, Mr. Vantrease!
2007 IHSS Scholarship Winner - Sarah
Trombetta - $500
Sarah
Trombetta Southwestern High School Piasa,
Illinois
Parent: Tracy Trombetta IHSS
Affilation: Sarah’s mother is IHSS member birds fan. She was
recommended by teachers and school staff.
With a community
service repertoire that is as extensive and impressive as few
others, Sarah Trombetta may be synonymous with volunteer. Whether
she’s helping out with community picnics throughout Macoupin County,
coaching a 9-10 year-old softball team, assisting with camps in
varied sports, helping with fundraisers, or being a “role model” for
the DARE program at Brighton North—Sarah is a positive influence on
children in her community. She feels that working with children and
the community is vital to the future and that working with kids
(mostly girls) allows her to “instill in them positive attitudes
about life and the opportunities that arise when they make good
decisions.”
By serving as a Salvation Army Bell Ringer,
helping with the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Shamrock
sale, and adopting families at Christmas, Sarah proves she is the
real deal.
Sarah is also a factor on the field and the
court.
For four years, she has been involved with the
volleyball, basketball, and softball programs at Southwestern High.
Sarah was named to the South Central Conference West Division
All-Conference Team as a utility outfielder in 2006, the same season
that the Lady Piasa Birds took 3rd place in the IHSA Class A
Softball State Finals Series. She has also been apart of something
special on the basketball team, of which she was a varsity player
for all four years. In those four seasons the Birds went undefeated
(40-0) in the conference, and won the IHSA Class A Regional as well
as the Macoupin County and Southwestern Thanksgiving Tournaments
each year. Sarah was a SCC-West Honorable Mention this past season.
She has also served as a captain in both softball and
volleyball.
With such a full plate of civic and athletic
duties, one must wonder how Sarah finds time for her studies.
Somehow, Sarah has managed to be the Class of 2007 President all
four years, as well as be a member of the National Honor Society,
Student Government, Pep Club, History Club, Spanish Club, FCCLA,
Future Medical Leaders of America, and Calculus Club. She held a
leadership/executive position in the bulk of these
organizations.
In her free time, she managed a 4.0 GPA (out
of 4.0) and is the Class of 2007 Valedictorian. As far as her summer
break is concerned, she spends that working part-time as a Teacher’s
Aide at Step By Step Early Childhood.
Sarah will be attending
Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in the
fall.
Congratulations, Miss Trombetta! 2007 IHSS Scholarship Winner - Kara
Dean - $500
Kara
Dean Johnston City High School Johnston City,
Illinois
Parents: Jimmy & Donnette Dean IHSS
Affiliation: Kara was nominated by IHSS member SI Hoops 1 with
recommendations from icoachitall, hobo, and gocatsgo4 in addition to
teachers.
An honor student who is no stranger to the myriad
of playing surfaces featured at Johnston City High School, Kara Dean
carries a résumé as impressive as they come. When she's not leading
her teams as the captain of each the softball, volleyball, and
women's basketball squads--she's heavily involved in both school
work and her civic and spiritual responsibilities.
Kara has
held a leadership position on the JCHS Student Council each year and
is currently serving as President. She is also a 4-year member of
the Math Team and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the latter of
which has seen her as Leader for the past two terms. Miss Dean has
also been involved in the Photography Club, Business Club, Growing
Up Well, A.L.P.H.A., Health Occupation Students of America as well
as having significant roles on her Prom Committee as a junior, a
three-year involvement with the school musical, and four year
dedications to American Red Cross Blood Drives and food drives. Miss
Dean was also the Prom Princess as a junior, the Homecoming Maid of
Honor as a senior, and one of WSIL TV's Unsung Heroes in October
2006.
This is just the tip of the iceberg for Kara, who is
also dedicated to her church and community. She has been an integral
part of an outreach program that has seen her in Mexico in 2004,
Atlanta, Georgia, in 2005, and Nebraska in 2006. For five years she
also assisted with the Southern Illinois Christian Service Camp and
has spent several years lending a helping hand to Vacation Bible
School, Children's Church, and the church nursery. Through her
Medical Careers class, she has also had the privilege of job
shadowing some of the finest medical practitioners in the region as
well as volunteering to help with the cleaning and organization of
medical buildings.
This amazing student/athlete, who is
described as "polite, honest, sincere" as well as having a "strong
work ethic with perseverance that will take her to any level she
desires" will be attending Murray State University this
fall.
Congratulations, Miss Kara Dean! 2007 IHSS Scholarship Winner -
Nicholas Parker - $500
Nicholas
Parker New Athens High School New Athens,
Illinois
Parents: Greg and Leann Parker IHSS
Affiliation: Nicholas was nominated by IHSS member oldgreen and
was recommended by teachers.
Nicholas Parker has received an
incredible amount of honors over the duration of his high school
career—in the classroom, on the playing surface, and amongst his
peers. Nicholas was not only the Prom Prince his junior year, but
this year he was chosen as the Homecoming King for New Athens
High.
King Parker also excelled in multiple sports, having
been a 4-year member of each the basketball, baseball, and golf
teams. An All-Area Honorable Mention his junior baseball season,
Nicholas’s basketball career has also seen its fair share of awards.
As a sophomore he was named to the All-Tournament team at Trico,
while he was named to the All-Tournament team at Chester his junior
and senior seasons. His final campaign saw him named to the Marissa
All-Tournament Team and the All-Cahokia Conference Team. Parker was
also an All-Area Honorable Mention his junior and senior
seasons.
Nicholas keeps himself busy when he’s not playing
in-season sports by earning a high enough GPA to earn himself the
position of Valedictorian of New Athens High’s Class of 2007. He was
a three-year member of the National Honor Society who had been named
President this past school term. He also served as Secretary of his
Student Council and has been named an Illinois State Scholar as well
as a Belleville Area Youth Salute. He has also been named to the
National Society of High School Scholars, honored by the local
Rotary Club, given the DAR Award, and named a Who’s Who Among
American High School Students.
As if those accolades weren’t
impressive enough, Nicholas also participated on the WYSE Team,
Match Team, and Spanish Club all four years while also participating
at the SIU-C Math Day and Southwestern Illinois College Math
Competition since his freshman year.
Nicholas also
volunteered his time to the Little Dribblers Basketball Program,
worked blood drives, tutored struggling students, and helped out at
the annual drag boat races in town—when he wasn’t working at the
local Santa Hut.
He will be attending Saint Louis College of
Pharmacy in the fall.
Jeffrey
Drake Harrisburg High School Harrisburg,
IL
Parents: Wyatt & Betty Drake IHSS
Affiliation: Jeffrey is IHSS member Bulldog Backer. His father
is IHSS member Giraffe. Jeffrey was recommended by teachers and
school staff.
Jeffrey Drake has been known to many as Bulldog
Backer since arriving on the IHSS scene in November 2003, however
many are unaware of this young man’s excellence in both the
classroom and through his dedication to high school and collegiate
athletics.
With a perfect GPA of 4.0 (on a 4.0 scale),
Jeffrey will graduate as the HHS Valedictorian as well as an
Illinois State Scholar for 2007. Drake has served as the Vice
President of the HHS Chapter of the National Honor Society since
2006 while also serving on the Key Club and participating in the
Spanish Club, Academic Club, as well as the Radio/TV program. He was
also a fixture of the Bulldog’s Scholastic Bowl team having been
named to the All-Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference, Ohio
Division Scholastic Bowl team in 2005.
It is his love for
sports that has garnered Jeffrey so much attention in the Harrisburg
area.
Jeffrey has served as a sports commentator for
Harrisburg’s WEBQ Radio since 2000, not only calling games alongside
his father but often flying solo in an effort to expand the stations
coverage and dedication to Saline County sports. No stranger to the
microphone, he has also served, since 2004, as a public address
announcer for Harrisburg Girls’ Basketball and Southeastern Illinois
College Basketball. Perhaps his most impressive accomplishment came
courtesy of the pen and parchment.
In 2006, Jeffrey finished
in 3rd place at the IHSA Journalism State Finals series under the
category of sports writing. He has been a state finalist each of the
three years that the IHSA has governed the activity, having most
recently won the Carbondale Sectional in 2007.
Even with such
a hectic extra-curricular schedule, Drake has made time to
participate in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life as well as
the WEBQ Radio charity auction.
Jeffrey Drake will be
continuing his education at Southeastern Illinois College, where has
already made significant progress towards his
degree.
Congratulations, Mr. Drake! 2007 IHSS Scholarship Winner:
Christopher Stewart - $500
Christopher
Stewart Benton Consolidated High School Benton,
Illinois
Parents: Alan & Terri Stewart IHSS
Affiliation: Chris is IHSS member super_ranger. He was
recommended by IHSS member Matt Malkovich in addition to
teachers.
Christopher “Chris” Stewart is not only
“super_ranger” by name, but it is a reputation that reflects his
ability in the classroom as well. While he may be ranked 3rd in the
BCHS Class of 2007, Chris still has a better than perfect GPA which
is currently 5.133 (on a weighted-5.0 scale). He also scored in the
upper echelon of ACT participants scoring a composite of 32 (out of
36)! The latter and former accomplishments are two of the reasons he
is yet another IHSS Scholarship recipient who was named an Illinois
State Scholar for 2007 as well as a Lions Club Academic
Honoree.
While he is dedicated to his studies, Chris also
finds time to participate in extra-curricular activities, church, as
well as maintaining the status of an entrepreneur.
President
is a role that is very familiar to Stewart, as he reprises this role
in each of the National Honor Society, Senior Class, as well as the
Pep Club. While serving as Vice President of Students in Action for
Education, Chris also found the time to play football as a freshman
and sophomore and tennis as a sophomore and junior, as well as
participate on the WYSE team. He helps spread the wealth of his vast
knowledge by serving as both a peer tutor and a private after-school
tutor.
It is through his membership of North Benton Baptist
Church that Stewart is able to serve as a member of the church’s
youth council, volunteer for the Benton-West City Ministerial
Alliance, and share his testimony as a summer missionary.
Chris also owns and operates his own personal lawn care and
landscaping business in the Benton-West City area.
With hopes
of some day becoming a pilot, Christopher Stewart will be attending
Purdue University with plans of majoring in an Engineering
program.
Congratulations, Mr. Stewart!
